VA Aid and Attendance Benefits: What Families in NJ Should Know

Elderly military veteran sits comfortably in a sunlit armchair in a cozy coastal-style living room, smiling as a caring home health aide gently rests a hand on his shoulder. Warm natural light streams through a window, with subtle American flag decor and nautical accents in the background, creating a peaceful, dignified atmosphere.

Many veterans across Ocean and Monmouth Counties are not aware of a valuable VA benefit. It is called the Aid and Attendance pension. This program was designed to help wartime veterans pay for in-home care. Surprisingly, it is often overlooked by the very families who need it most.

At Saba Home Health Care in Toms River, local veterans and their families are guided through this process. Our team is committed to making sure no veteran in our community misses out.

What Is the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit?

Aid and Attendance is an added monthly payment on top of a VA pension. It was created for veterans and surviving spouses who need daily living assistance. Tasks like bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation are all covered under this definition.

A separate category, the Housebound allowance, is also offered by the VA. This is intended for veterans confined to their homes due to a permanent disability. However, both benefits cannot be collected at the same time.

Who Is Considered Eligible?

Several conditions must be met before this benefit is approved. First, active duty service of at least 90 days is required. At least one of those days must fall within a recognized wartime period. Additionally, the veteran’s yearly household income must fall below a limit set by Congress.

From a medical standpoint, at least one of these situations must apply:

  • Help from another person is needed for routine daily activities.
  • A large portion of the day is spent in bed due to illness.
  • Residence in a nursing home is required because of lost mental or physical ability.
  • Corrected eyesight in both eyes is limited to 5/200 or less.

For the Housebound allowance, a single permanent disability rated at 100% must be documented. The veteran must also be largely confined to the home as a result.

How Much Can Be Received?

Payment amounts are determined by income, number of dependents, and unreimbursed medical costs. These payments are issued monthly and are not subject to federal or state taxes. For a single veteran with no dependents, the Housebound rate can reach roughly $1,776 per month. Aid and Attendance rates tend to be even higher.

How Saba Home Health Care Supports Veterans Locally

For families in Toms River, Brick, Lakewood, Point Pleasant, and across the Shore region, navigating VA paperwork is often stressful. That is exactly where our team steps in. Veterans are walked through each stage of the application. VA Form 21-2680 must be completed, and a physician’s evaluation is also required.

Once benefits are approved, in-home care services for veterans and their spouses can be arranged right away. Skilled nursing, personal care, companionship, and 24-hour live-in support are all offered through our agency. Each care plan is shaped around the veteran’s individual needs and living situation.

Why This Matters for Our Community

A significant number of veterans reside in Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Many served in Vietnam, Korea, and the Gulf War. As these men and women age, daily tasks become harder to manage alone. Through the Aid and Attendance program, the cost of in-home care can be partially or fully offset. Saba Home Health Care also partners with local senior-focused community organizations to support quality of life throughout the region.

Families are not expected to handle this alone. Our caregivers and registered nurses at Saba Home Health Care are trained specifically for veteran care. Respite support is also available for family members who carry the daily caregiving load.

Take the First Step Today
